This is the 8th year for the HOPE Club and it is the largest it has ever been! Since the schedule has changed this year, our 6th grade students are able to participate. Right now, there are over 150 HOPE members! Students were able to choose between several different activities to participate in. Animal Shelter Outreach met yesterday with Ms. James. Students in this activity worked on making dog and cat toys to donate to a local shelter. The Military Outreach group met with Mrs. Ingle today and created bead flag pins that they plan to pass out to the Veterans at our school's annual Veteran's Assembly. The Staff Appreciation Group met with Mrs. Yerkes today and put together popcorn balls to recognize the support staff in our building for all of the hard work that they do. The Level 3 Group had fun working together on a project. The Elementary Visit Group traveled to Cottonwood Elementary with Mrs. Snouffer and Miss Aldridge. They made spider headbands with Mrs. Glen and Mrs. Koechner's Kindergarten students. They all had such a great time! The Vintage Park Group had a wonderful time playing games with the Vintage Park Residents! Twenty students participated in this activity and none of them could stop talking about how much they enjoyed it. Several were discussing with the residents what games they would play when they come back next month.

The HOPE members that signed up to go to Sunflower had a great time today. Groups of 4-5 HOPE members gave students in Mrs. Pennington, Mrs. Oakley, Mrs. McDaniel, and Mrs. Meridith's rooms instructions on how to make their own mummies with yarn and googly eyes. Thank you so much to these teachers for opening up their classrooms to our students! On the way back to the Middle School, the members were all smiles as they talked about their experiences in the classrooms. They critiqued their presentations and gave themselves performance goals for the next time. Great job! Way to work on Helping Other People Everyday! Students that signed up for the Elementary Visit walked to Cottonwood to work with Mrs. Armbruster's 2nd grade classroom. There were 22 members of HOPE that helped their buddies to color a race track, trees, buildings, and a car. On the walk back to the Middle School the HOPE members kept talking about how much they had enjoyed working with the 2nd graders. Mrs. Armbruster reported that her students were so excited to have their middle school buddies that it was hard to get them to pack up to go home! Thanks for letting us bring our HOPE group Mrs. Armbruster! We will visit this class again in November for some Turkey decorating fun! This month the Beautification group made 3-D snowflakes to hang up on the outside of the library. The commons area sure looks "beautiful". The Staff Appreciation put together goody bags for all of the Paola Middle School staff. Thank you to all of the HOPE members that donated snacks to help make this possible. The Elementary School group traveled to Sunflower Elementary School. They played math games with the students. The Vintage Park group made glittery pine cone decorations with the residents. The residents had several beautiful decorations to take back to their rooms by the time our group was finished. Today HOPE members met with their group for this month. Mr. Criddle walked to the HOPE Garden with his group. They planted an assortment of perennials for their activity. Mrs. Most took students outside for the School Beautification group. Students wrote inspirational messages on the sidewalks and cleaned up around the school. Mrs. Hedrick met with the Staff Appreciation group to honor the para-educators, nurses, and speech pathologists that work with our students. They made signs to hang up around the school and made homemade hand sugar scrubs to give to thank those that "Give a Helping Hand". Mrs. Armbruster met with the group that will visit the Elementary schools. Students planned activities for their visit to Cottonwood on November 25. The Vintage Park group walked over to interact with the residents. They helped with an auction that Julie, the Vintage Park Activities Director, put together. Participating residents bid on different items with monopoly money. Today students traveled to Sunflower Elementary School. They played Math games in some of the third, fourth, and fifth grade classrooms. Fun was had by all that participated and many of the HOPE members attending were so excited from today's experience they were eager to participate in next month's activity. The Vintage Park Halloween Party was today. Twenty-two students attended and in the spirit of Halloween, some dressed up in costumes. They played a "Getting to Know you" Bingo with the residents and then passed out cookies and punch. The residents were happy to have a party with us and were excited to hear that we will be back to visit in November. Today the Vintage Park, Elementary School, Staff Appreciation, and School Beautification groups met. Mrs. Andrea Most, a PMS 8th grade Science teacher, led the School Beautification group. Participating students wrote inspirational messages on the sidewalks as well as picking up around the school grounds. Mrs. Most mentioned that her group did an excellent job. Mrs. Abby Hedrick, a PMS 7th grade Math teacher, led the Staff Appreciation group. Students made goody baskets, cards, and decorated bulletin boards around the school to show their appreciation for our custodians. Mrs. Hedrick reported that all of the students involved had a wonderful time and were eager to participate in future projects. Mrs. Sandi Armbruster, a PMS 8th grade Communications teacher and originator of the HOPE vision, led the Elementary School group. This meeting helped to inform students of the upcoming visit to Sunflower Elementary School. During this time students created Math games to play with the third grade students when they visit them on October 25. Mrs. Armbruster mentioned how wonderful the students were and they were excited to participate. I lead the Vintage Park group. For this meeting we discussed the Halloween Party that we would have with the residents on Wednesday, October 23 during seminar. Students worked hard making Zombie hands for goody bags. We used latex gloves, various candy, ribbon, and HOPE tags. Students also created door tags with the residents names on them with Halloween themed pictures and sayings. A great time was had by all. Today was our first HOPE activity. Mr. Larry Criddle, a Paola Middle School 7th and 8th grade Social Studies teacher took interested students to work in the HOPE Garden, which is located by the soccer practice fields on Industrial road. He along with others in the community began the garden in its current location 2 years ago.
Today was our first H.O.P.E. meeting. Mrs. Sandi Armbruster and I were overwhelmed by the number of students that attended and were excited about participating. We have received 100 member requests. We are very excited!!
